Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Arm Lift in Bedford, NH
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, reduces sagging skin and excess fat between the underarm and elbow for a smoother, more toned contour. Dr. Steven L. Brown, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs arm lift surgery for patients from Bedford, Manchester, and across southern New Hampshire.
Is an Arm Lift Right for You?
Good candidates are adults at a stable weight who are bothered by loose, hanging skin of the upper arms, often after significant weight loss or with aging. Exercise can tone the underlying muscle, but it cannot tighten skin that has lost its elasticity. During your consultation, Dr. Brown will review your goals, your health history, and the scar that results from the procedure.
About the Procedure
Brachioplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Excess skin is removed through an incision along the inner or back surface of the upper arm, and the underlying supporting tissue is tightened. Liposuction is often combined with the lift, and the procedure is typically performed on both arms for symmetry. Temporary drains are often placed.
Recovery and Results
Swelling and bruising are expected and improve over several weeks. A compression garment is typically worn during early healing, and many patients return to desk work within one to two weeks. Strenuous activity and lifting are restricted until Dr. Brown clears you. Patients are encouraged to incorporate arm exercise during recovery to help optimize muscle definition. Scars fade gradually over time. Ask us about bioCorneum scar treatment, available for purchase in our office.
Arm Lift FAQs
Who is a good candidate for an arm lift?
Adults at a stable weight with loose upper arm skin that has not improved with diet and exercise are often good candidates. Non-smokers in good overall health tend to heal best.
Will I have a scar after an arm lift?
Yes. The incision typically runs along the inner or back of the upper arm. Dr. Brown places it as discreetly as possible, and most scars fade significantly over the first year.
Can liposuction be combined with an arm lift?
Yes. Liposuction is often combined with brachioplasty to remove excess fat and refine the contour of the arm.
How long is recovery after an arm lift?
Many patients return to light activity and desk work in one to two weeks. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are usually restricted for several weeks.
Is an arm lift covered by insurance?
Arm lift surgery is usually considered cosmetic and is not typically covered by insurance. Our office can review costs with you at your consultation.
