Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid Surgery in Bedford, NH
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, addresses the excess skin, soft tissue, and fat that make the eyes look tired or puffy over time. Dr. Steven L. Brown, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs upper and lower eyelid surgery for patients from Bedford, Manchester, and across southern New Hampshire.
Is Eyelid Surgery Right for You?
Patients with hooded upper lids, under-eye bags, or lower lid laxity that affects their appearance, or in some cases their vision, are good candidates. By correcting redundant skin and puffiness in the upper and lower eyelids, blepharoplasty helps patients achieve a more alert, energetic appearance. Dr. Brown will confirm whether you are a candidate during your consultation.
About the Procedure
Surgery removes loose skin that can hide the natural contour of the upper eye and, in some cases, impair vision, along with fatty deposits causing puffiness or under-eye bags. Dr. Brown can also tighten and suspend the lower eyelid when needed. Blepharoplasty is routinely performed on an outpatient basis at the Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center, using local anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
Recovery and Results
Bruising and swelling around the eyes are common for one to two weeks. Cool compresses and keeping the head elevated help, and many patients return to work and social activities in about 7 to 10 days. Incisions are placed in the natural creases of the eyelids, so scars are typically well hidden as they heal. Ask us about bioCorneum scar treatment, available for purchase in our office.
Eyelid Surgery FAQs
What is the difference between upper and lower eyelid surgery?
Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin that creates a hooded or heavy look. Lower eyelid surgery addresses under-eye bags, puffiness, and lid laxity. Both can be performed together.
Can eyelid surgery improve my vision?
When sagging upper eyelid skin blocks part of your field of vision, removing it can help. Dr. Brown will evaluate this during your consultation.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Blepharoplasty is performed using local anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
How long is recovery after eyelid surgery?
Most bruising and swelling resolve within one to two weeks, and many patients return to work in about 7 to 10 days.
Is eyelid surgery covered by insurance?
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is not typically covered. When upper eyelid skin impairs vision, insurance may cover part of the procedure, depending on your plan and documentation.
