Nerve & Tendon Surgery

Nerve & Tendon Surgery, Bedford NH

Nerve entrapment, such as ulnar or radial nerve compression, and tendon injuries can significantly limit hand function. Dr. Steven L. Brown’s fellowship training in hand and microsurgery prepared him to treat these conditions for patients from Bedford, Manchester, and southern New Hampshire.

Conditions We Treat

Dr. Brown treats nerve compression at the wrist and elbow, including cubital tunnel syndrome, as well as cut or damaged nerves, tendon lacerations, tendon ruptures, and tendonitis that has not responded to splinting, therapy, or injections. Early evaluation matters, because nerve and tendon injuries are often easier to repair soon after they occur.

Nerve and tendon surgery in Bedford, NH

About the Procedure

The surgical approach depends on the nerve or tendon involved and the severity of the injury. Nerve procedures may release pressure on a compressed nerve or repair a damaged one under magnification. Tendon procedures repair or reconstruct the tendon so the fingers can bend and straighten again. Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

Recovery and Hand Therapy

After surgery the hand is usually protected in a splint. Hand therapy is commonly recommended to support recovery of strength and motion, and it is an important part of the result. Recovery time varies widely, from a few weeks for a simple nerve release to several months for tendon and nerve repairs.

Nerve & Tendon Surgery FAQs

How do I know if I have a nerve or tendon problem?

Numbness, tingling, weakness, or an inability to bend or straighten a finger are common signs. Dr. Brown will examine your hand and may order nerve studies or imaging to confirm the diagnosis.

How soon should a cut tendon or nerve be repaired?

As early as possible. If you have had a deep cut to the hand or wrist followed by numbness or loss of movement, call our office promptly.

Will I need hand therapy after surgery?

In most cases, yes. Therapy protects the repair while it heals and helps restore motion and strength.

How long does a nerve take to recover?

Nerves heal slowly, and improvement can continue for many months. Recovery depends on the type of injury, its location, and your age and health.

Is nerve and tendon surgery covered by insurance?

These procedures are generally considered medically necessary. Our office verifies your benefits and handles authorization before surgery.
