Joint Replacement & Reconstruction
Hand Joint Replacement, Bedford NH
For patients with arthritic joint damage or complex tissue loss affecting the hand, wrist, or elbow, Dr. Steven L. Brown offers joint replacement and reconstructive surgery. A fellowship-trained hand surgeon, he treats patients from Bedford, Manchester, and across southern New Hampshire.
Conditions We Treat
Joint replacement and reconstruction can help when osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or an old injury has left a finger, thumb, or wrist joint painful, stiff, or unstable. Dr. Brown’s fellowship training also covers post-traumatic injury, congenital hand differences, and neurologic and vascular conditions of the hand.
About the Procedure
Treatment is customized during your consultation based on the joint involved and the type of reconstruction needed. Options include replacing the damaged joint surfaces with an implant, rebuilding the joint with your own tissue, or fusing the joint to relieve pain. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis whenever possible.
Recovery and Hand Therapy
The hand is protected in a splint after surgery, followed by a guided hand therapy program to restore motion and strength. Many patients notice pain relief early, while grip strength and dexterity continue to improve over several months. Dr. Brown will give you a timeline based on your procedure.
Hand Joint Replacement FAQs
Am I a candidate for hand joint replacement?
You may be if joint pain or stiffness limits daily activities and has not improved with splinting, medication, injections, or therapy. Dr. Brown will review your X-rays and symptoms to recommend the best option.
Which hand joints can be replaced?
Joint replacement is most often performed on the knuckles and middle joints of the fingers, the base of the thumb, and the wrist.
How long do hand joint implants last?
Many implants last for years, but longevity varies with the joint, the implant, and how the hand is used. Dr. Brown will discuss what to expect for your situation.
What is the difference between joint replacement and joint fusion?
Replacement preserves movement in the joint. Fusion eliminates movement but gives a stable, pain-free joint. The right choice depends on the joint and your goals.
Is hand joint replacement covered by insurance?
These procedures are generally considered medically necessary. Our office verifies your benefits and handles authorization before surgery.
