Fat Grafting
Facial Fat Grafting in Bedford, NH
Facial fat grafting, also called fat transfer, uses your own fat to restore the volume the face loses with age. Dr. Steven L. Brown, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs fat grafting for patients from Bedford, Manchester, and across southern New Hampshire.
What Fat Grafting Can Treat
Fat transfer adds soft, natural-looking fullness to hollow cheeks, under-eye hollows, the temples, the folds between the nose and mouth, and thinning lips. Because the material is your own tissue, an allergic reaction is not a concern. Fat grafting can be done on its own or combined with a facelift or eyelid surgery.
How the Procedure Works
Fat is collected with gentle liposuction from an area such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, then purified and injected in small amounts into the areas of the face that need volume. Depending on the extent of treatment, fat grafting is performed with local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia, and most patients go home the same day.
Recovery and Results
Swelling and bruising are most noticeable during the first one to two weeks. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed over the first few months, typically 20-30%, and the fat that remains is long-lasting. Final results are usually visible at three to six months.
Fat Grafting FAQs
How long do fat grafting results last?
The fat that survives the first few months becomes living tissue and can last for years. It continues to age naturally along with the rest of your face.
Should I choose fat grafting or dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a quick in-office treatment that typically lasts 6 to 12 months. Fat grafting is a surgical procedure with more downtime, but the results last much longer and suit patients who need more volume. Dr. Brown will recommend the right approach at your consultation.
Where is the fat taken from?
Usually the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. Only a small amount is needed, so the donor area does not change noticeably.
Is fat grafting painful?
The donor and treatment areas are numbed during the procedure. Afterward, most patients describe soreness and tightness for a few days, which is managed with medication.
Does insurance cover fat grafting?
Cosmetic facial fat grafting is not covered by insurance. Fat grafting performed as part of reconstructive surgery may be, and our office can help verify your benefits.
